What others are saying.

It can sometimes be useful to read what other people are saying about your world.

We came across this article from November 2007 which highlights many of the points we make.

Too many people who "design" websites actually do not understand the medium and confuse it with printing or a brochure or something for the TV.

This article can be summarised in the quotation below;

"Web design is the creation of digital environments that facilitate and encourage human activity; reflect or adapt to individual voices and content; and change gracefully over time while always retaining their identity."

Doing business over the webConverting visitors to phone calls and sales

"Its the words on the page!"

The quality of content becomes a priority when the focus turns from building relevant traffic to the website towards conversion of the site visitor to a contact, sale or other relevant business outcome.

Many a website has earned great search engine listings and resulting visitors only to find that the visitors leave as soon as they arrive with little evidence left behind of who they were or what they were expecting.

The copy on a website is the same as a business introduction. It needs to be clear, setup an expectation and fulfill it. It also needs to respond to two types of visitors; the human "web searcher" and the search engine "robot".

Get to the solution faster!

Let’s talk about the "web searcher"

People no longer "surf the web". People nowadays are looking for something, and they want it fast!

Most web visitors that use search engines are searching specifically for something.

They use multiple words to find specific items; such as “woman cashmere sweater worcester” so It is important that they find what they are looking for within 2-4 clicks.

If the website is appealing and they find that the web site provides the information or item they are searching for, credibility and trust will be the next consideration.

Why?

NOTE: If the original impact of the web site is negative, with unprofessional graphics, typos, poor or uninteresting copy, poor resolution, slow loading or missing links, etc. the visitor usually won’t bother with additional clicks.

Most people want to know;

  • Who is the owner of the web site?
  • Who are they dealing with?

Background statements, pictures and bios, service explanations and white papers can all add credibility and reassure the new visitor.

If the website is an e-commerce website (online shop) then they want to know;

  • their credit card details are secure
  • the returns policy if they have issues with what they have bought
  • their money is safe with you - you are a real business!

Remember, the website words are replacing a conversation with you. So it should be written from the point of view of the visitor. When you meet someone you ask questions or confirm situations or needs, so the opening copy should be written in the same vein.

To capture the reader’s attention, identify his need and then present your services or products. Don’t be afraid of being human – the style should be personal and have an emotional appeal.

So what now?

Here we have outlined the considerations to ensure that the website converts traffic well. But if your current site does OK but in your opinion you think you should be doing better, what then?

So, now you need to be analysing the actual activity of you website visitors.
